As I sit back watching the news that the mega-corporations have so thoughtfully chosen for me, I see a little bit about Bernie (that crazy old socialist!), a little more about Hillary (what has she done now?), and a bit more about the Republicans (anti-everything but have America’s interests at heart!) However, as we grow closer to the 2016 election, one celebrity…er, candidate... “Trumps” them all. Yes, our very own backyard bully, Donald Trump. As I read and watch countless news stories about the groups he most recently offended, I notice that he has no patience for diplomacy. I recall that diplomacy is necessary for politicians. I recall that Trump the Grump is not a stupid man, and most likely would know this. I conclude that he is not appropriate for politics and has likely figured this out. So this begs the question: Why run?
He isn’t doing this to make money. The money he would make as president wouldn’t cover the costs to run, even if by some long shot chance he got elected and then elected to a second term. His net take-home would be just under 3.2 million over 8 years! He’s already spent half of that, mostly his own money, before October 2015!!!!!
Motivation the First
One glaring thought is that he actually IS doing this for more money. While I would agree that most politicians attempting to ascend to the highest office must possess a streak of narcissism, “The Donald” oozes narcissism, and would most likely see a marketing deal, a few books and added popularity out of this campaign, regardless of outcome. What better way to boost one’s ego than having swarms of people cheering one on and calling one’s name? Billionaires don’t run for office, they buy a politician, so his motivation must be less for political purposes and more for the power and possible added wealth, or at minimum for the fame.
Motivation the Second
…Unless his motivation IS for political purposes. Knowing that Trump is friends with the Clintons, and Hillary is looking more and more like the democratic candidate, perhaps he is saying what he knows republicans want to hear to get the ticket, to bomb out, and to ensure Hillary wins.
Motivation the Third
…Which brings me to the possibility that this is just all a game to Trump. Perhaps it’s to get Hillary elected. Perhaps it’s to point out that any unqualified person can get the job if he or she can steal enough air time. Perhaps it’s to make fun of those who actually follow him. Perhaps he is just bored and wants to make waves. It is all a game to him.
Conclusion
No matter the ultimate motivation, is IS all a game to Mr. Trump. What’s the worst that could happen, honestly? When gaffs have brought other candidates to their knees, his gaffs raised him up in the polls. He is invested in so many ventures that if one fails, he can’t go broke again, and in the very unlikely instance he did, he is extremely adept at filing bankruptcy and starting anew. If his marriage fails, he’ll go purchase a new wife. There is nothing, save his own death, that can truly harm him and so regardless of his motivation, this campaign is a game to him.
However, my life is not a game. His decisions, should he be elected, will affect me and I don’t have the protections he has. I cannot afford to elect a loudmouthed bully with no sense for diplomacy. While I’m confident his true intentions will eventually come out, I ultimately don’t care because I can’t afford to elect him.
Dump Trump.
